‘I’m too busy!’
‘Oh no you’re not.’
Everything in life is a choice, except death and taxes, unless you’re rich enough to freeze your own head or set up business in a tax haven. Work never ends, as Parkinson’s Law tells us, it expands endlessly, like an unstoppable monster. But you don’t have to work that way. Take Dirty Harry’s famous business tip, ‘A man’s gotta know his limitations.’
It’s a sad fact but true, you will never get to the end of your to do list, whether you’re a businessman or businesswoman. And forget genderised multi-tasking as a solution, you can literally only do one thing at a time. But everybody knows that, right? So how to solve an impossible problem? Take a leaf out of Captain Kirk’s book, ‘reprogramme’ the problem. There’s only one thing to do, not more than one, get rid of your to do list and do something smarter. If it’s on two pages you’re never going to get to page two anyway, just say ‘No’.
Without realising it you’ve already decided not to do a whole bunch of stuff. Writing it on a piece of paper has demonstrated that it’s impossible, which you did know already, you just haven’t caught up with your pen and paper, don’t let them be smarter than you are! You can drastically reduce your task list, and therefore your workload, by deciding not to do it all in the first place. Once you’ve grasped this then you can do the impossible — get your work done, go home at a decent time and have some fun at lunchtime. It’s not rocket science, unless you’re a rocket scientist …
